Let's Talk Mirrors

Mirrors are one of the best ways to refresh a space. Mirrors aren't just decorative, they can also be functional. Let's talk mirrors...

Mirrors can maximize light in a small room…
Mirrors are one of the BEST ways to make small spaces look bigger. If placed across from a window or other lighting source, the mirror helps to reflect much needed light around the space.

Near an entry or not?
I love mirrors near an entryway. Depending on the style, you can definitely set the tone for the rest of your space by getting a mirror that matches the rest of your home. Or, you can go with a mirror that's bold and out of the element of the space. This works great if you're trying to make a big impact with guests and to perk you up on your way in or out the door. Mirrors at the entry of your home also allows dwellers to take a quick peek at their appearance before walking out a door.

Floor mirror vs. wall mirror…
I love them both. I say, if you have the space to put a floor mirror, go for it. It makes the function that much more effective. If you have a smaller space and can't afford to give up both floor and wall space, then you should go with a wall mirror. You can achieve the same effect of a floor mirror, if you hang a wall mirror that is long and horizontal. My favorite big mirrors are round or oval.

Both wall and floor mirrors come in so many different styles, it's really easy to pick the wrong one. The best thing to do is stick to your gut and choose something you LOVE that isn't too trendy.

Scale REALLY matters…
Seriously, it's very important. You don't want to have a gigantic mirror if your room is tiny. If you love the idea of a large mirror, but have a small space, try doing a group of smaller mirrors. They'll bounce around light just like one large mirror would; but, they'll look better, because the scale matches your small space.

Same thing goes for a bigger space; if your room is massive, you would go with a large scale mirror.

You CAN break the rules about scale if you're looking for dramatic impact. Just make sure that the mirror matches the style of the rest of the space. You don’t want to have a mirror that doesn't match in both scale AND style; it'll look like you just threw the mirror in the mix, because you didn't have anything else to put there.

Unconventional places to put a mirror…
  • Behind your bed...
    • I love to see tall floor mirrors used behind the bed. If you don't have a headboard (or don't like headboards), this is a good option for you.
  • Outdoors…
    • I've seen mirrors placed on patio walls. This is a great conversation starter, because many people won't expect it. It's also great for helping bounce around light in an otherwise dark outdoor space.
  • Long, dark hallways…
    • Mirrors placed in longer, darker hallways are great, because other than making the space feel a bit larger, mirrors are great to put in that black space. Artwork would be harder to see in these hallways if there isn't sufficient lighting, so mirrors are usually a better choice.
So tell me, are you in love with mirrors as much as I am? Do you have anything to add to our little mirror chat? What about styles? Is there any particular mirror style you like more than others? My favorite right now is the sunburst mirror, but more on that on another post!

  1. You have made me realize I don't have any mirrors in my house (well, except for the ones in the bathrooms). Hm, I like these suggestions and maybe I'll find one on a garage sale this summer :)

Btw, I read your about me page and I also love to bling everything!! Love it! And when are you getting married?!?!

    1. *Gasp* You have no mirrors in your home? How dare you? J/K!!

I love mirrors! I have so many that I haven't even hung up yet, because the reality is that they won't all look good in my space. Of course, that doesn't matter when I find new ones in the store or thrift shops (or flea markets), I just buy them anyway. I'll be able to use them for something eventually, right?

I would love to help you pick out one. Did you see my next post of some of my favorite mirrors that I've rounded up?

Wedding date...? Hmmm... not sure yet... we've been pushing the date back more and more, because we have a lot going on right now. We're moving to Tennessee in a couple of weeks, my fiance will be looking for a new job, and I'm just starting a business. We wanted to do something small in the winter, but we might end up having a bigger wedding in April, back here in New Orleans. We promised ourselves that we will pick a date by the end of May, and I plan on sticking to it!
